Vitaly Zaginaev, who specialises in hazardous natural phenomena such as mudflows and glacial lake outburst floods, works as a researcher at the Institute for Mountain Community Research at the University of Central Asia. This institute is considered one of the leading centres in the region studying glaciers and associated risks. In August, the scientist conducted an expedition to the Chelekto glacial complex located in the Noorus River basin, along with representatives from Kyrgyzhydromet and the Ministry of Emergency Situations. “Modern glaciers do not correspond to the current climate and continue to retreat. We cannot stop warming, but we can adapt to it. The main thing is that people remember the places where disasters occur and take measures to clear riverbeds and monitor the condition of bridges. Significant damage is caused by debris that blocks riverbeds. It is necessary to develop early warning systems and improve monitoring methods. We are in a period where glaciers require constant reassessment every season, and although the volume of work has increased, it is manageable,” he says.
