The districts in the West Nile region that were selected by West Nile Rural Electrification Company (WENRECo) as part of its pilot initiative to measure performance indicators, are experiencing notable improvements in teaching and learning in underperforming schools. Launched in February this year, the initiative covers five districts: Maracha, Terego, Yumbe, Zombo, and Arua. Each district selected three poorly performing schools to benefit from the programme. Wayi Dragamulai, the Koboko District Education Officer, noted that the partnership is making tangible progress and called on other education stakeholders to join in supporting these efforts. “There has been a significant change, especially in Koboko schools like Nyambere, Metino, and Lurujo, which are benefiting from this programme. The improvements are evident, and with WENRECo’s support, teachers are now motivated and dedicated. We are hopeful for positive results in the end,” Wayi explained. WENRECo was established in 2003 by the Industrial Promotion Services (IPS), a programme of the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development (AKFED). The company was created in response to the government’s request for international assistance in constructing a vertically integrated, isolated power grid on a Build-Own-Operate (BOO) basis.
