For 11-year-old Shirleen Micere, pain in her joints was more than just growing pains. It was the start of a challenging journey. Diagnosed with juvenile arthritis in 2024, Shirleen’s story shines a light on the silent struggle many children face. Dr Anjella Migowa, a paediatric rheumatologist at Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) who manages Shirleen’s care, explains that arthritis in children is a signal that the immune system is incorrectly attacking the joints. "A child experiencing joint pain or swelling should never be ignored," she urges, emphasising the need for early medical evaluation. Expanding research, supported by institutions like AKU, is vital to closing knowledge gaps and improving policies for children’s health.
