Dr Zainab Samad, Associate Professor of Medicine, consultant cardiologist and chair of the Department of Medicine at the Aga Khan University in Karachi, writes that available data from the World Health Organization, women in Pakistan have much higher age-standardised rates of death from cardiovascular disease compared with men. Emerging science points to important sex differences in the development, clinical presentation, and health outcomes of heart disease in men and women. A study showed that women with coronary heart disease had greater adverse cardiovascular responses to mental stress than men. This study also showed that women reported poor access to preventative care services prior to a heart attack.
