Point De Vue journalist Fanny del Volta frames His Highness’s official visit to Canada from 25-31 March at the invitation of Prime Minister Mark Carney. The visit, which will allow His Highness to meet with members of his community, also strengthens the close ties between the Ismaili Imamat and Canada. The story dates to 1971 when Uganda’s President Idi Amin decided to reinforce the Africanization of the country, ordering those of South Asian origin, to leave Uganda within 90 days. The Ismaili community found refuge in Canada. Less than ten years after this exodus, the Aga Khan Foundation Canada (AKFC) was established and works closely with Canadian private and public institutions to combat poverty in Africa and Asia. Shared values of pluralism cemented the relationship, producing landmark institutions including the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto and the Global Centre for Pluralism in Ottawa.
