A great way to explore a place is through the lens of its culture, heritage, and local distinctiveness. Cultural heritage stimulates respect and understanding of other cultures and, as a consequence, promotes peace and understanding. India is one of the most diverse countries in terms of cultural heritage, with various heritage routes offering unique experiences based on UNESCO-recognised sites. Such is the case at Sunder Nursery in Delhi. It won the inaugural UNESCO Special Recognition for Sustainable Development award in 2020 for its transformative management of the historic area adjacent to Delhi's popular Humayun's Tomb. This 90-acre site, comprising heritage elements, ecological zones, and a nursery, was opened to the public in 2018 after a decade-long renovation by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC), in partnership with the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) and the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Sunder Nursery was chosen for its transformative impact in turning a barren site into an urban oasis in the heart of New Delhi, according to the jury.
