Karachi, Pakistan, 19 September 2023 - The Aga Khan University (AKU) has launched a Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS), expanding its programmes into new fields beyond the health sciences and teacher education.
The inaugural FAS class comprises almost 100 students from across Pakistan. They can major in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies; Social Development Studies; Philosophy, Politics and Economics; or Human and Environmental Biology. FAS’s needs-sensitive admission process admits students based on merit, regardless of their ability to pay, and offers financial assistance where needed.
“This new faculty, our first in Pakistan in 30 years, marks the beginning of AKU’s evolution into a truly comprehensive university,” said Princess Zahra Aga Khan, on behalf of AKU’s Chancellor, His Highness the Aga Khan. “In a world of constant change, growing diversity and global interconnection, FAS will lay the foundation for a life of continuous learning and an understanding of widely varying perspectives.”
In the words of AKU President Sulaiman Shahabuddin, the Faculty aims “to nurture individuals who will invigorate civil society, advocate for good governance, drive social and economic progress, foster appreciation for pluralism and promote ethical conduct.”
