Adina Mohamad: Development of tree nurseries

In Afghanistan, AKF has assisted the development of horticulture by providing training in horticultural techniques and establishing private, commercial mother stock nurseries which supply new and improved varieties of fruit and nut trees.

Adina Mohamad is a former opium poppy farmer who now grows fruit trees at his nursery for commercial sale.
AKDN supports nine now fully privatised nurseries, such Adina's, to provide varieties of more than 80,000 root-stock and saplings to more than 1,000 farmers per year.
These interventions have contributed to increases in the average productivity of wheat (58%), potato (25%), apple (116%) and vegetables (25%) since 2005.
