In Tanzania, the Aga Khan Health Services (AKHS) works closely with the Ministry of Health to improve the health of vulnerable population groups, especially mothers and children, and promote health services development on the national and regional levels.

When Women for Women Reconstructive Surgery came to East Africa, it selected the Aga Khan Hospitals as partners for its reconstructive surgery. In Tanzania, for example, the all-female team of surgeons from the United States and Canada worked with the non-profit Aga Khan Hospital and a government hospital, Muhimbili National Hospital, to offer reconstructive surgery to the neediest of patients. The work also included teaching and training local surgeons.
