With the commissioning of Bujagali Hydropower, the proportion of Uganda's electricity supply being generated from renewable sources rose to 90 percent, making the country's electricity supply one of the cleanest in the world. Since 2012, the project has been improving the quality of life for Ugandan in many different ways. For example, previously, the lack of a steady electricity supply hampered economic growth. With the addition of Bujagali hydropower to the grid, the steady supply of power allows businesses of all sizes to extend their service hours, expand their operations and attract investment. Furthermore, frequent load-shedding had led many institutions, like schools, universities and hospitals, to maintain costly diesel generators. A reliable supply of electricity has allowd these institutions to reduce the overall costs of energy while offering better services, such as night classes for nursing staff and diagnostic tests at clinics. "We have come a long way from a careless confidence that the built environment would somehow take care of itself. We are increasingly aware that the quality of our buildings can transform the quality of our lives, both spiritual and material." His Highness the Aga Khan speaking at the Aga Khan Award for Architecture 2010 Award Presentation Ceremony, Doha, Quatar - 24 November 2010.
