In high mountain areas of Badakhshan,Tajikistan, AKAH works with local communities to build irrigation channels, pathways, and other structural mitigation projects to protect communities from the effects of avalanches, flooding, mud slides and rock falls.
FOCUS
Working with the people of Gorno-Badakhshan and the Government of Tajikistan, Focus Humanitarian Assistance, which is now part of the Aga Khan Agency for Habitat, has developed a guide that expands on indigenous knowledge and more recent practices to create a comprehensive guide to planning for, responding to and recovering from disasters.
This is augmented by installing early warning systems, moving homes and schools to higher ground, stockpiling essential goods and training emergency response teams at the village level, the AKDN reinforces the resiliency of communities living in hazard-prone regions.
