Aga Khan Foundation
AKDN / Ali Shaheen
With over nine million people in Syria facing food insecurity, the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) is working to meet the basic needs of the most vulnerable. Alongside partners including the World Food Programme (WFP), the European Commission and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), we continue to deliver emergency food supplies to those most in need.
But food aid alone is not enough. To lay the foundations for recovery, families need the means to feed themselves and their livestock. Drought, rising temperatures and soaring prices for essentials like fertiliser are threatening already fragile livelihoods. We are helping smallholders build sustainable, climate-resilient futures by providing inputs such as sheep, barley seeds and cactus, alongside training in how to manage them.
Through regenerative farming, renewable energy projects and sustainable water management, we’re working with communities to strengthen their resilience and support long-term adaptation to a changing climate – so that families can lead their own recovery.
AKDN has worked in Syria for decades to improve the quality of life for the Syrian people. We collaborate with international partners, national authorities, and local communities to deliver long-term, locally led solutions that strengthen Syrian communities and ensure opportunities for all.
