The campus of each Aga Khan Academy is architect designed and purpose built. It features exceptional facilities for all aspects of student life. Each campus is designed by renowned architects and is tailored both to meet the needs of the school and to maximise the potential of the site.
Architects with experience in school design are selected for each new Academy, ensuring that the design is culturally sensitive and draws from local heritage and architectural traditions. The design process takes into account best practices in facility design and environmental sustainability. Construction techniques allow spaces to be used for multiple purposes, while classroom environments are conducive to interactive learning.
The campus landscape is also vital to the educational programme. It is designed to facilitate experiential learning and reflection, allowing intangible yet important aspects of education to happen outside the classroom. The campuses feature state-of-the-art facilities, including classrooms, laboratories, resource centres, extensive sports facilities, dedicated arts and music spaces, technology infrastructure, student residences and dining areas.
In accordance with AKDN’s aim to become net zero carbon by 2030, each Academy audits and reduces its greenhouse gas emissions, and takes steps to increase its energy efficiency.
The Aga Khan Academy Dhaka received the Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies (EDGE) certification before it opened, making it the first project in Bangladesh to receive this certification. The EDGE label is awarded to outstanding buildings that demonstrate resource efficiency of 20-40 percent in energy, water and embodied energy materials compared to local benchmarks. As a leader in sustainability, it is hoped that the campus will catalyse the development of further eco-friendly buildings in the country.

The Academies in Hyderabad, Maputo and Mombasa offer a full residential campus with housing for Grade 6-12 students, teachers and administrators. Student residences provide secure accommodation and are closely supervised by faculty in residence. The residential programme for senior students at these three Academies allows students from all parts of the country and beyond to participate in visits and exchanges between Academies, broadening their experience through immersion in a different cultural and linguistic context. The Academy in Dhaka will soon offer this programme.
