The Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development (AKFED)’s Tourism Promotion Services group manages 23 hotels, resorts, lodges and camps in Eastern Africa. The two Serena hotels in Kigali and Kivu add to Rwanda’s business and tourism infrastructure, bringing in revenue, creating employment and enriching the surrounding areas. We firmly believe in the development of sustainable tourism and are supportive of the natural environment and of local traditions and culture.

Kigali Serena is located close to most of the government, embassy and development aid offices, while Kivu Serena is set in a resort town by a lake. The hotels provide extensive training for employees; enhance the overall service standards for the industry; increase foreign exchange and government revenue in the form of concession fees, income tax and value added tax; and create business for local suppliers.
Spending by international visitors has also helped support a wide range of local economic activities, including handicrafts and souvenirs, restaurants, transportation, tours, entertainment, sports and leisure activities. The increased tourism and business travel has helped sustain employment and create additional direct and indirect jobs.
