AKDN has worked in India since 1905, when an Aga Khan School was established in Gujarat. We now implement a spectrum of programmes aimed at improving the quality of life of disadvantaged communities. Our agencies work together to meet immediate needs and to secure the country’s development and its people’s long-term wellbeing.

Our early childhood development programmes in Bihar, Delhi, Gujarat, and Uttar Pradesh bring locally relevant curricula together with international best practice. We support parents, health workers and preschool teachers, involve communities and contribute to governmental efforts.

AKDN stimulates economic growth at all levels. AKF helps women and youth learn skills and access finance and jobs, and supports collectives to access government funding, while AKFED has helped small co-operative societies merge to form the commercial DCB Bank.

The Aga Khan Schools in India educate more than 8,500 children
AKDN has provided education in India since 1905. Today we operate a hostel, 19 preschools and eight schools, as well as the Aga Khan Academy Hyderabad. We work with governments, schools and parents to improve the quality of education in the country.

AKDN works with communities to provide vital infrastructure in resource-poor areas. We supply materials, expertise, training and construction management for houses, promote toilet construction and improve access to drinking water.

AKDN facilitates health care for underserved populations in several regions, with particular attention to the needs of women and children. We operate a 158-bed acute care hospital and undertake training and education programmes in partnership with the government and private sector.
