AKDN’s activities in Mali have encompassed cultural restoration and social development projects in Bamako, Mopti, Timbuktu and Djenné, as well as economic development projects and civil society building across the country. Our multi-input area development interventions combined environmental, social and economic elements.

Civil Society
6,000
AKF has trained 6,000 farmers, half of them women, in marketing and market development
We have worked with civil society organisations across Mali, giving village-level groups the ability to address their development needs. We promoted collaboration with the government, increasing tax recovery rates and better representing citizens’ priorities in government planning.
Cultural Development
345
The Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC) has trained 345 people in construction and related skills
We have worked with the government to create the National Park of Mali, in Bamako. We have restored mosques in Timbuktu, Mopti and Djenné. We also renew the surrounding areas, providing water and sanitation facilities, and developing public spaces to improve the quality of life.
Health and Nutrition
450,000
The health programme benefited 450,000 residents of Mopti and Djenné
Responding to high infant and maternal mortality rates, we established 100 rural maternity health centres in these areas. We collected health data for regional authorities, trained health workers and worked to reduce the high rates of malnutrition and diarrhoeal diseases.
Microfinance
50%
Almost half of PAMF-Mali’s clients are women
We established Première Agence de Microfinance Mali (PAMF-Mali), which offers credit and savings products tailored to urban and rural users. Its group loans are popular in rural areas, where they are used for agricultural production and livestock.
Multi-Input Area Development
43,000
AKDN worked with over 43,000 farmers in the region
We worked in 200 villages in the remote areas of Mopti and Djenné, where nearly 90 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. We implemented projects in health, nutrition, gender equality, rural development, education and civil society.
