Musallam al-Kathiri is a music researcher, arts manager, performer, and composer from Muscat, Sultanate of Oman. He has made important contributions to the collection, documentation, preservation, and dissemination of Omani music. He has served on many governmental committees, councils, and working groups concerned with music and culture. From 2006-2019 he was the director of the Oman Center for Traditional Music, founded in 1983 as an initiative of Oman’s late leader, Sultan Qaboos bin Sa’id.
Musallam al-Kathiri is the author of books, book chapters, and articles on Omani music published in both Arabic and English, including, most recently, a contribution to Music in Arabia: Perspectives on Heritage, Mobility, and Nation, published by Indiana University Press (2021). His compositions for the oud have been performed in concerts at the Oman Center for Traditional Music and the Omani Association for Oud Amateurs. With his band Al-Balad, he has composed and recorded several original muwashshahat.
