Cairo, Egypt, 25 March 2005 - His Highness the Aga Khan and the First Lady, Her Excellency Madame Suzanne Mubarak, officially inaugurated Cairo's Al-Azhar Park. The 74-acre Park not only provides a 'green lung' for the densely populated city of Cairo, but also acts as a catalyst for social, economic and cultural renewal. What started as one project actually turned into three: the design and construction of a park, the restoration of the Ayyubid Wall, and the community redevelopment of the historically-important Darb al-Ahmar neighbourhood. Paying tribute to the Park project, Cairo's Governor Dr. Abdel Azim Wazier remarked that the project did not only aim to expand the green space and revive the cultural heritage that belongs to humanity at a whole, but also intended to revitalise the environment, the handicrafts and the accumulated experiences.
