Maputo, Mozambique, 8 December 2022 – AKDN has donated 20,000 school desks to Mozambican public secondary schools, to be distributed in close coordination with the Ministry of Education and Human Development. They will be used across the country as needed, with most intended for the northern provinces.
During the inauguration of the Aga Khan Academy in the city of Matola, Maputo province in March, 2022, the Government of the Republic of Mozambique had identified school equipment as a priority to leverage the quality of public education.
AKDN Diplomatic Representative Mr Nazim Ahmad announced the donation during a reception held on the occasion of the 65th Imamat Day of His Highness the Aga Khan and the 100th anniversary of the Serena Polana Hotel.
Mrs Eldevina Materula, Minister of Culture and Tourism responded: “Education is undoubtedly one of the pillars for the development of any society, and Mozambique is no exception. We reiterate our deep gratitude and recognition for this invaluable support with these 20,000 school desks that our country will benefit from.”

The Aga Khan Academy Maputo, now in its ninth year, is making a significant educational contribution to Mozambique. Sixty-two percent of its 390 students are Mozambican, as are 71 percent of those receiving financial aid. The Academy’s Professional Development Centre works with 23 public primary schools and has trained more than 1,300 education professionals.
AKDN and the Government of Mozambique signed an Agreement of Cooperation for Development in 1998, and AKDN has since worked with over 500,000 Mozambicans across the fields of health, agriculture, economic development, civil society and humanitarian assistance. As Mrs Materula said, “More than a mere reception, this occasion represents a celebration of good relations of cooperation with the Aga Khan Development Network and the fruitful results it has managed to achieve in various areas, in particular on culture, tourism, education and training, initiatives that deserve the full approval of our Government.”
