The Aga Khan Music Programme (AKMP) supports the efforts of talented musicians and music educators to sustain, further develop and transmit musical traditions that are a vital part of their cultural heritage. Formerly known as the Music Initiative, it was launched in 2000 in response to the rupture of traditional musical transmission during the Soviet era and the need for resources to develop artistic traditions that validate and sustain local identities and cultural heritage.
