It took a year to document the 70 structures of the Quli Qutb Shah Tomb complex
Located in the city of Hyderabad, capital of Telengana, the Qutb Shahi Tombs Complex and Deccan Park site is one of the most significant medieval necropolises in history. It comprises 70 structures, encompassing 40 mausoleums, 23 mosques, five stepwells/water structures, a hammam (mortuary bath), pavilions, garden structures and enclosure walls built during the reign of the Qutb Shahi Dynasty that ruled the region for 170 years in the 16th and 17th centuries.
The Qutb Shahi Tombs Complex is being developed as an urban archaeological park, to showcase and ensure long-term preservation, and to enhance understanding of the monuments that stand within its boundaries. Future connections with Golconda Fort will allow this site to serve as a starting point for the Qutb Shahi Trail of Hyderabad, promoting interest in heritage amongst locals and tourists.
As with the projects in Delhi, we are undertaking the proposed conservation and landscaping works with our own financial resources or those raised from partner agencies such as the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and other corporate donors. In November 2022, the work on the six stepwells received the Award of Distinction at the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation.
