Founded in Tehran at the beginning of 2020, the Golshan Ensemble brings together four young artists who had already achieved distinction in their own musical domains. Asareh Shekarchi studied percussion and kamancheh, learning from her father, the renowned musician Ali-Akbar Shekarchi, before focusing on vocal practice. Bahareh Fayazi began learning the tar and setar at the age of eight, studying with some of Iran’s preeminent master musicians, and is an active performer and recording artist. Kamancheh virtuoso Negar Kharkan has been a member of some of Iran’s most esteemed classical music ensembles, including the Shahnaz Ensemble of Mohammed Reza Shajarian, and is also a composer and author. Percussionist Nazanin Pedarsani began learning music at the age of four and since then has performed on tombak and daf in many concerts internationally. The Golshan Ensemble interprets the canonical Iranian repertoire of seven dastgahs that was elaborated during the Qajar era (1789-1925) while also studying and revitalising the works of the great Iranian traditional composers and performers of the last hundred years. Though inspired by traditional models of timbre, voicing, and form, Golshan Ensemble creates its own contemporary sound that is uniquely theirs. All of the members of the ensemble are active as teachers, with a special focus on transmitting their musical tradition to girls and women.
